Vicksburg

Sid actually asked me whether I had any shots of Vicksburg Mississippi that might be appropriate for this blog. I knew I had taken at least a couple of shots when we were there so I took a look for them.

In case you don't know Vicksburg was the site of a major battle which took place during the Civil War.

I was originally going to make the shots look like old photographs but didn't like the final result, the same for black and white, I thought the images needed a bit more oomph. I played around with the images some more and liked this pastel rendition, almost like a hand painted photograph. It still had a bit of that eerie feel which I was looking for.

Where art meets the landscape

Graveyards of all shapes and sizes have drawn me to them for many years. Often they are places of reflection, after all you're walking through a place where people have been put to rest (as they say) and they have a kind of morbid beauty manifested in the sculptures and stonework which abide there. They are often quiet places, removed from the busy haunts and paths of the living. Cemeteries are human spaces where stone marks past lives and yet that stone too, symbol of permanence, decays over time.
